Timbers top Chivas USA 2-0 in US Open Cup

The Portland Timbers earned their first “official” win as an MLS team tonight, a 2-0 win over Chivas USA in the first round of the US Open Cup.  After a spectacular kick save by goalkeeper Jake Gleeson on a Chivas breakaway late in the match, Jack Jewsbury hit a perfect shot from 35 yards out seconds later that gave the Timbers a 1-0 lead, and a Jewsbury corner three minutes later gave the Timbers a 2-0 win as Eric Brunner knocked in his own rebound.

The Timbers will now face San Jose in the second round next month on the road.
