The Timbers U-23s had a unique chance to qualify for the US Open Cup for the first time, as instead of the previously announced coin flip, the spot in the tournament for the PDL Northwest Division would be decided by the regular season match between the Timbers and the Kitsap Pumas on Friday. The teams had been deadlocked in points, wins, goal differential, and goals after four matches, so a decision was agreed to that the already-scheduled match this Friday would be the decider.
Unfortunately for the Timbers, they would fall just short in a 3-2 loss in front of 4,754 at JELD-WEN Field. After going down 2-0 early, the Timbers brought themselves within a goal after a second half goal by Brent Richards. But Kitsap added another goal twelve minutes later, and a late goal by Portland’s Nick Palodichuk wasn’t enough.
