In the opening match of the final day of the preseason tournament at Portland’s JELD-WEN Field, it was the San Jose Earthquakes who put on the scoring display of the tournament, adding four goals in the second half to a 1-0 halftime lead for a 5-0 demolition of Chivas USA.
Chris Wondolowski had the only goal of the first half as he made a deep run down the left side, then slid a tight-angle shot past Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy for the early lead. It would be 1-0 San Jose at the half.
The Earthquakes opened things up in the second half, with Justin Morrow heading in the second goal for San Jose in the 52nd minute. In the 80th minute, it was Tressor Moreno opening the San Jose lead out to three goals with a blast to the left side from 20 yards out. Sercan Guvenisik had the next goal for San Jose just a few minutes later, finishing a give-and-go with Moreno for the 4-0 lead.
San Jose would add another just before stoppage time when Sam Garza putting in another tight-angle shot for the 5-0 final. With the 5-0 win, San Jose scored almost as many goals (five) as the first four games of the tournament put together (six).
