Timbers add Scottish defender Steven Smith, waive James Marcelin

The Timbers have made the third roster addition in the past two weeks, as Scottish defender Steven Smith joins the Timbers.

Smith played nine seasons in Scotland and England, starting with 55 matches with Rangers, where his side won three Scottish Premier League titles during that time.  Smith was a teammate of Timbers forward for 4 1/2 seasons at Rangers, and he most recently played for Preston North End in 2011-2012.

The Timbers also announced that midfielder James Marcelin has been waived.  The Haitian midfielder was one of the United Soccer Leagues Timbers who came up with the squad to Major League Soccer, having joined the Timbers in 2010.  Marcelin was waived for what were said to be “non-soccer-related reasons.”
