Valeri scores in MLS-record ninth straight match in Timbers 3-0 win over Orlando

Diego Valeri extended his MLS-record consecutive goalscoring streak to nine games with a penalty kick in the 15th minute, then adding another goal in the 59th minute, and Darren Mattocks adding another goal between Valeri’s goal with a strike in the 29th minute as the Timbers shut out Orlando City SC 3-0. The day was also remarkable for the presence of five year old goalkeeper Derrick Tellez, fulfilling his dream to be a Timbers player through the Make-A-Wish foundation. Tellez was voted Man of the Match by the Timbers fans.

Timbers forward Darren Mattocks had an early chance on a breakaway down the left side, but his close-in shot was kicked away by Orlando goalkeeper (and former Timber) Joe Bendik. In the 15th minute a Video Assisted Review of a foul in the Orlando City box resulted in a Timbers penalty kick, which Diego Valeri slipped inside the right post to give the Timbers the early 1-0 lead.

In the 30th minute, the Timbers would double the lead when midfielder Diego Chara played a spectacular touch pass into the run of Dairon Asprilla, who one-touched a pass across the goal mouth into the run of Mattocks, with the Timbers forward one-touching the ball pass Bendik and into the net to give the Timbers the 2-0 lead, which would be the score at the break.

Barely a minute into the second half, the visitors would be down to 10 players as defender Jonathan Spector, who had already been cautioned in the first half, received a second yellow on a foul on Valeri. The Timbers would not take long to take advantage of the extra man when in the 59th minute, after Bendik had saved a shot from Mattocks, Valeri charged after the rebound and knocked the ball into the net just before crossing the end line to widen the score to 3-0.

Orlando City would go down to 9 players in the 85th minute when Victor Pagliari Giro was ejected for an elbow to the face of Chara during an Orlando City free kick, but there was no more scoring and the Timbers held on for the 3-0 win.

Jeff Attinella would record four saves for the Timbers in the winning effort while Joe Bendik had seven saves for the visitors.
