The Portland Timbers hosted Los Angeles FC Wednesday night for a mid-week home game, and earned their second straight win as Felipe Mora scored a stoppage time goal to break a 1-1 tie as the Timbers defeated LAFC by a 2-1 score.
The Timbers did not take long to jump out to a lead, when just over a minute into the match, the Timbers took advantage of Los Angeles being unable to clear a ball, and Josecarlos Van Rankin played a high ball into the box that Diego Valeri controlled behind LA defender (and former Timber) Marco Farfan, and Valeri slipped the shot between LA goalkeeper Tomas Romero‘s legs and into the net, to give the Timbers the early 1-0 lead. It was Valeri’s 100th goal as Timber.
LAFC would tie the score in the 17th minute when Diego Rossi had a run down the right side, playing a perfect pass to a charging Carlos Vela, who one-touched the shot just inside the left post to level the score at 1-1.
The match looked like it was going to finish as a 1-1 draw until deep into stoppage time when Sebastián Blanco played a high pass into the box where it found the head of Felipe Mora, whose shot slipped just inside the left post, giving the Timbers the lead that they would hold onto for the 2-1 win.
Steve Clark had five saves for the Timbers while Tomas Romero had a single save for Los Angeles FC.
