Timbers open 2022 regular season today vs. New England Revolution

The Portland Timbers open their 2022 regular season campaign, their 12th since joining Major League Soccer in 2011, this afternoon at 4:30 at Providence Park against the defending Supporters’ Shield Champion, the New England Revolution.

The Timbers are 4-1-3 (W-L-D) when they have opened their regular season at home, their lone loss being a 3-1 loss to Minnesota United in 2019.  Their record is 5-2-3 in home openers overall during their MLS era.  The last match against the Revolution (and last match against them at home) was September 25, 2019, which ended in a 2-2 draw.  The Timbers are 2-1-7 (W-L-D) overall against the Revolution, and 2-0-3 against them at home.

The Revolution had a record-breaking 73 points last season in winning the Supporters’ Shield, the most in MLS history, and 12 points more than the next highest total last season, which was the Colorado Rapids.  But the Revolution fell to New York City FC in penalty kicks in their first round playoff match.  Yes that does sound familiar, doesn’t it?

This season marks the retirement of the Revolution’s “Crayon Flag” logo that was much-loved by the Revolution fans and the team had used since their 1996 debut as one of the league’s founding teams.  The new “No R in Revolution” logo has not gone over well with most of the Revolution fans.  I don’t get it either.  Are they the “Evolution” now?

The match starts at 4:30 today at Providence Park, and I will have photos of the match posted here later..

See you all there!
