Timbers can’t make man advantage pay off, draw Houston 0-0

The Portland Timbers were up a man for the last 15 minutes in their match in Houston against the Dynamo, but could not find the net, but they also would not concede a goal on the night, and ended up leaving with a 0-0 draw.

The first good chance for either team would be in the seventh minute, when Darwin Quintero found himself open for the Dynamo on a break, cut back before his shot, but his shot was saved nicely by Aljaž Ivačič.

Then in the 18th minute, it was Houston’s Fafà Picault who got in behind the Timbers defense for lone breakaway, but his shot would also be stopped by Ivačič.

The Timbers would finally get a good scoring chance in the 39th minute when the Dynamo were unable to clear the ball, and Cristhian Paredes ended up getting a good look from the top of the box, but his shot was parried away by former Timbers goalkeeper Steve Clark.  A few minutes later it was Sebastián Blanco with a good look after Yimmi Chará set him up with an open look, but his curling shot was just high and wide.  The match was 0-0 at the break.

In the 64th minute, Houston thought they had taken the lead when Picault’s header off a free kick appeared headed into the net, but Ivačič would make a spectacular save that directed the ball off the right post, but the Timbers were able to clear.

In the 74th minute, things would turn in the Timbers’ favor when the Dynamo’s Teenage Hadebe was sent off for this second yellow card, so the Timbers would finish with the man advantage.  The Timbers would have a few week chances with the advantage, but never seriously threatened to score, and the match would end in a 0-0 draw.

Aljaž Ivačič would record four saves for the Timbers, while Steve Clark would record two saves for the Dynamo.
