Shorthanded Timbers no match for Atlanta, fall by 5-1 score

The Portland Timbers were without several starters, as new midfielder Evander has also been added to the list.  The Timbers had an early goal by Eryk WIlliamson called back, and then the Timbers ended up on their back foot as Atlanta found the net 5 times in a 5-1 win.

Caleb Wiley got behind the Timbers defense to slip in the first goal for a 1-0 lead, and Thiago Almada had a brilliant curling free kick during first half stoppage time for the 2-0 lead.  Georgios Giakoumakis would add to the lead with a header in the 58th minute, and Luiz Araujo would score in the 74th minute for the 4-0 lead.

The Timbers would get a goal back in the 83rd minute when Tega Ikoba would net his first MLS goal for the Timbers, and becomes the Timbers all-time youngest goal scorer at the age of 19, making the score 4-1 Atlanta.  Almada would net his second goal of the night for the hosts a few minutes later, and Atlanta would emerge with the 5-1 win.
