The Portland Timbers put up a viliant Leagues Cup effort against Mexico powerhouse Tigres, but would play must of the match shorthanded, and fell by a 2-1 score. Evander had the goal for the Timbers, while Nicolás López and Jesús Alberto Angulo would score for Tigres.
The Timbers would take advantage of the first good scoring chance either team had, when it the 24th minute, the Timbers had a free kick just outside the Tigres box. and Evander would curl the free kick chance perfectly into the upper right corner past Nahuel Guzman, and the Timbers had a 1-0 lead.
In the 42nd minute, Tigres would tie it up when Nicolás López made a nice run down the middle of the defense, and finished easily past Aljaž Ivačič, and the score was level at 1-1.
Just two minutes later, the game changed when Evander was given a second yellow card just a few minutes after he received his first, and the Timbers would have to finish the match down a player. The match would be tied 1-1 at the break.
Tigres had plenty of chances to take the lead in the second half, including an open header at the far post missed, and a shot off the crossbar, but in the 80th minute, the constant Tigres pressure would pay off when Jesús Alberto Angulo got an open header attempt on a corner kick, and converted, and Tigres had a 2-1 lead.
The Timbers were never able to tie it up, and would fall by a 2-1 score.
