Thorns fall 2-1 to Angel City FC

The Portland Thorns would fall to Angel City FC by a 2-1 score in a UKG Challenge Cup match.  Morgan Weaver would have the lone Thorns goal, while Savannah McCaskill scored a brace or Angel City.

It would only take until the 9th minute for Angel City to take the lead, when Jasmyne Spencer played a nice ball in to Savannah McCaskill, who finished with a nice header at the near post past Thorns goalkeeper Bella Bixby, and Angel City had a 1-0 lead.

After being played by Angel City for much of the half, in the 44th minute, the Thorns actually tied it up on their first good scoring chance of the half, when Natalia Kuikka played a pass across the Angel City box to Morgan Weaver, who put the ball on her right foot, then curled a shot nicely past Angelina Anderson, and the score was level at 1-1.  This would be the score at the break.

But just a few minutes into the second half, Angel City retook the lead, when McCaskill took a free kick from just outside the Thorns box, and curled it beautifully just inside the right post, and Angel City was leading 2-1.

Angel City did come close to widening their lead in the 60th minute, but Meghan Klingenberg headed a shot off the line.

In the 83rd minute, the Thorns would earn a penalty kick on a foul on Olivia Moultrie.  She’d step up to take the kick, but her kick was poor and saved easily by Anderson.  Moultrie had another good attempt shortly afterwards, but Anderson made a good save.

The  Thorns had a few good chances late, but never found the equalizer, and fell by a 2-1 score.
