Late handball PK costs Thorns a win, results in 1-1 draw with Washington

The Portland Thorns thought they were going to steal a win in Washington, but a late PK would cost them that result in a 1-1 draw with the Washington Spirit.  Morgan Weaver had the goal for the Thorns, while Ashley Hatch would score for the Spirit.

The first half was largely controlled by the Washington Spirit, though neither team really seriously threatened to score, though it was very notable that Sophia Smith went down injured just before halftime.  The score was 0-0 at the break.

The second half featured more of the same, with the Spirit dominating possession, but neither team seriously threatening to score. But in the 64th minute, the Thorns would make their first good opportunity pay off when Sam Coffey played a nice pass to Morgan Weaver on a break, with Weaver beating goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury to the upper right corner, and the Thorns surprisingly had the 1-0 lead.

Late in regulation time, the Spirit would be awarded a penalty kick after  a VAR review when a cross was off a Thorns defender Emily Menges‘s foot, then immediately off her hand, and this play was ruled a handball.  Ashley Hatch would take the penalty kick and converted to tie the score at 1-1.

This would be the final score.
