The Timbers fell behind 2-0 to the Sounders early, but a Seattle red card changed the match and the Timbers rallied for a 2-2 draw. Dairon Asprilla and Evander would score for the Timbers, while Raúl Ruidíaz and Léo Chú scored for the hosts.
The hosts took a lead in the 9th minute when Raúl Ruidíaz was positioned well at the far post to get his head on a re-direction of a corner kick, and his header put the Sounders up 1-0.
In the 30th minute, the Sounders doubled the lead when Léo Chú slipped in behind the Timbers defense, and slotted a shot past David Bingham to put Seattle up 1-0. But during the celebration, Chú would take off his shirt which earned him a yellow, which would be a key point later.
In the 53rd minute, Chú was called for a hard foul on Zac McGraw, and earned a second yellow and the Timbers would be up a player for the rest of the match.
It would pay off for the Timbers in the 67th minute with a play that was very similar to the goal by Ruidiaz, except it was Timbers throw this time that was reidrected to a player open at the far post, who was Dairon Asprilla this time, and he headed home to bring the Timbers within a 2-1 score.
Just three minutes later, Portland’s Evander found himself open on a counterattack, 25 yards out from goal, and he perfectly curled a shot into the upper right corner past goalkeeper Stefan Frei, and the match was tied at 2-2, which would be the final.
