The Portland Timbers got a solid beating at the hands of CF Montréal. at the short end of a 4-1 result. Sunusi Ibrahim, Kwadwo Opoku, Mathieu Choinière, and Mason Toye would all score for the hosts, while Franck Boli would net the lone Timbers goal.
After neither team had many scoring chances early, Montréal would break through in the 28th minute when Kwadwo Opoku would make a breakaway run down the right side, and would cross to a wide-open Sunusi Ibrahim. who had an easy tap-in from close range, and the hosts had a 1-0 lead.
In the 35th minute, it was Opuku would be causing trouble again, as his low shot from the top of the box deflected off the foot of defender Dario Župarić, and eluded Timbers goalkeeper David Bingham, and Montréal had a 2-0 lead. This would be the score at the halftime break.
After the Timbers had a few reasonably good chances to score in the second half that fell short, the home side widened the lead in the 64th minute when Mathieu Choinière let go a blast from outside the Timbers box that somehow eluded Bingham, and the lead was now 3-0.
In the 76th minute, Montréal would pad their lead even more when after Bingham had made a save, the ball fell to a wide open Mason Toye, who finished easily, making the lead 4-0.
The Timbers would get a goal back in the 86th minute, when Yimmi Chará (despite having first apparently played the ball with his hand), crossed to Franck Boli, who nicely back-heeled the ball into the net. Though the goal would stand after VAR review, the Timbers would be at the short end of the 4-1 score.
