The Portland Timbers would go out to an early lead on Sunday afternoon against the Sounders, but couldn’t hold that lead and would fall 2-1 to the visitors. Felipe Mora had the lone goal for the Timbers, while Christian Roldan and Raúl Ruidíaz would score for the Sounders.
After a physically tough first 10 minutes where neither team had any advantage, the Timbers made their first good opportunity pay off in the 14th minute. Eric Miller played a long ball into the box that was chested down by Jonathan Rodríguez into the run of Felipe Mora, who had a pretty easy finish, and the Timbers had an early 1-0 lead.
But just five minutes later, and Sounders would tie it up when a seemingly harmless shot by Christian Roldan appeared to ricochet off the foot of Timbers defender Kamal Miller, and though Jordan Morris appeared to be in an offside position and in the line of sight of the keeper, the goal was reviewed by VAR and upheld, so the score was 1-1. In the 31st minute Seattle had another great chance that ricocheted again on the way to goal, but went wide this time.
Both teams would have reasonably good chances before the half but neither team seriously threatened to score, and the match would be level at the break.
In the 50th minute, Seattle would take the lead when Raúl Ruidíaz hit a nice curling shot from the top of the box that was well beyond the reach of Timbers keeper Maxime Crépeau, and the Sounders had a 2-1 lead.
Both teams had a few good chances for the rest of the match, but the Timbers never found the equalizer, and the Sounders would leave with a 2-1 win.
