Late Timbers goal by Jonathan Rodríguez the difference in 2-1 win in San Jose

The Portland Timbers had their first match in 10 days on Wednesday night in San Jose, and got a late goal to steal a 2-1 win over the Earthquakes.  Evander and Jonathan Rodríguez had the goals for the Timbers, while Paul Marie had the lone goal for the hosts.

In the 22nd minute, the Timbers would take the lead on an aggressive play from Evander. San Jose goalkeeper Jacob Jackson, who was in his first match for the Earthquakes, attempted to play a ball from his own defender, but Evander was able to block the clearance attempt, then jumped on the rebound before any Earthquakes defenders could recover, and finished from just a few yards away to make the score 1-0 Timbers.  The Earthquakes had a few good chances that we negated by plays where they were offside, including a goal that was negated.

In the 44th minute, Santiago Moreno had a great look from just outside the San Jose box, but the shot was just over the crossbar.  The Timbers would lead 1-0 at the break.

In the 50th minute, the hosts would tie it up on a spectacular shot into the upper right corner by Paul Marie from 25 yards out after he had a good look at the ball after the Timbers attempted to clear a corner, and the score was now 1-1.  Minutes later that Earthquakes had a golden opportunity to take the lead when Amahl Pellegrino beat the Timbers defense and had a one-on-one with Timbers goalkeeper James Pantemis and even rounded him and had a chance at an open net, but somehow put the shot wide and the score was still 1-1.  In the 59th minute, San Jose would have another one-on-one break after the defense broke down again, but this time Pantemis came out of his box and spectacularly headed the ball away to end the threat.

In the 72nd minute, the Timbers would re-take the lead when Evander made a nice chip into the box into the run of Jonathan Rodríguez, who eluded his defender and made a nice header past the Earthquakes goalkeeper, and the score was now 2-1 Timbers.

The Earthquakes had some good late chances, including a free kick into stoppage time that fell to the feet of Alfredo Morales who had an open chance from just a few yards out, but somehow blasted the chance over the crossbar. The Timbers held on for a 2-1 win.
