Timbers fall short in Los Angeles against the Galaxy, by a 3-2 score

The Portland Timbers fought back from a few deficits, but never found the late equalizer, and ended up on the short end of a 3-2 result against the Los Angeles Galaxy.  Jonathan Rodríguez and Santiago Moreno would score for the Timbers, while Gabriel Pec, Riqui Puig, and Joseph Paintsil would score for the hosts.

The host Galaxy had some good early chances, but were kept out of the Timbers net by good saves by James Pantemis, probably the best being in the 24th minute when a blast from Gabriel Pec was tipped just past the post.  In the 30th minute Santiago Moreno had a surprising chance for the Timbers but it was just wide left.

But in the 38th minute, the Timbers defense would have a breakdown when Joseph Paintsil made a perfectly-timed run in behind the Timbers defense, and eluded a charging Pantemis, and then passed to a wide-open Pec who scored easily, and the Galaxy had a 1-0 lead.  In first half stoppage time the Timbers had a wonderful chance to equalize when Morena made a steal deep in Galaxy territory and played the ball to Evander, who slipped his shot just wide left.

In the 48th minute, the Galaxy would get a second goal seemingly out of nowhere when Riqui Puig was left open outside the top of the Timbers box, and he slid a low shot just inside the left post past Pantemis, and the Galaxy now had a 2-0 lead.

But just four minutes later, the Timbers pulled that goal back when Evander played a nice pass to Jonathan Rodríguez who one-timed a shot past John McCarthy, and the score was now 2-1 Galaxy.

But just a few minutes later, the Galaxy restored their two goal lead when Paintsil had a 1-on-2 break against the Timbers, but a nice cutback gave him an open shot that he finished well, and the Galaxy lead was now 3-1.

Then in the 73rd minute, the Timbers would pull back a goal yet again, when Moreno made a few nice cuts across the top of the Galaxy box, then blasted a shot just under the crossbar past McCarthy, and the score was now 3-2.  In the 85th minute, Antony did well to produce a chance for Rodríguez, but his shot was saved nicely by McCarthy.  Seconds later Puig had a great chance for the Galaxy, but Pantemis made an equally good save.

In second half stoppage time, Miguel Araujo had an open header chance on a Rodríguez cross, but the effort was over the crossbar.  The Timbers would have a few good late chances, but never found the equalizer, and the Galaxy would hold on for the 3-2 win.
