The Portland Thorns got a goal just before halftime to defeat the Seattle Reign by a 1-0 score, but fail to advance in the Summer Cup. Payton Linnehan had the lone goal for the Thorns.
This match would not feature a lot of good scoring chances, though both teams had a few reasonably good chances through the first half, but neither team really threatened.
In the 40th minute, the Thorns would finally break through when Marie Müller made a long pass into the run of Payton Linnehan, who made a nice cut and finished with a high shot to Laurel Ivory‘s near side, and the score was now 1-0 Thorns. This would be the score at the break.
In the 72nd minute, Linnehan had another good chance, this time after a pass from Hina Sugita, but Ivory was up to the task this time with a good save. Six minutes later the Reign had their best chance of the half when Olivia Marie Athens had an open chance from near the penalty spot, but Shelby Hogan came off her line and slightly deflected the shot, just enough so it went wide. Neither team really threatened to score again and the match would end in a 1-0 victory for the Thorns.
Despite the win, the Thorns did not have enough of a goal differential to advance in the Summer Cup.
