Timbers drop 3-1 result to St. Louis City in Leagues Cup round of 32

The Portland Timbers never found their form in the Leagues Cup round of 32 match at St. Louis, and fell by a 3-1 score.  Claudio Bravo had the lone goal for the Timbers, while Cedric Teuchert, Marcel Hartel, and Simon Becher had the goals for the host.

In just the second minute, a header by City’s Simon Becher was off the right post.  After controlling much of play, St. Louis had another great chance in the 25th minute when Becher hit the right post again, this time from the top of the box.

In the 30th minute the Timbers had their first good chance, a shot by Juan David Mosquera after a drop pass from Felipe Mora that was saved nicely by Roman Bürki.  In the 39th minute, Nökkvi Thórisson had a great chance in close off a pass from Jayden Reid, but Maxime Crépeau made a great reaction save.  At the half the match was scoreless.

In the 49th minute Jonathan Rodríguez had an open change on a cross from Mosquera, but hurried the shot and totally mis-hit the shot.  In the 51st minute the Timbers would pay for their sloppy play, when an errant clearance from Crépeau was intercepted, then a deflected shot fell to City’s Cedric Teuchert who scored from close-in, and St. Louis had a 1-0 lead.

But just a minute later, the Timbers tied it up when Claudio Bravo hit an incredible strike from 25 yards out that was just inside the right post and into the net, and the score was level again at 1-1.

In the 83rd minute, St. Louis would take the lead again after a corner kick, Eduard Löwen chipped a pass into Marcel Hartel , who finished well, and the home side regained their lead at 2-1.

In the 88th minute, the home side finished the match off when Becher did well to get his foot on a loose ball in the Timbers box, and shot softly and nicely into the upper right corner past Crépeau, and the St. Louis City lead was now 3-1.

In the 93rd minute the Timbers had a great chance to pull back a goal when Zac McGraw had an open chance from close-in, but put the shot over the crossbar.  The Timbers would be at the short end of the 3-1 result as St. Louis City move on.
