The Timbers put up an amazing comeback against visiting St. Louis City, getting a late shorthanded free kick goal to draw level for a 4-4 final. Jonathan Rodríguez had the Timbers first goal while Felipe Mora scored twice and Evander had the late equalizer.. Simon Becher, Eduard Löwen, Cedric Teuchert, and Nökkvi Þórisson scored for the visitors.
In just the 11th minute, the visitors would take the lead on a Marcel Hartel corner kick that was headed home past Maxime Crépeau by Simon Becher, and St. Louis had an early 1-0 lead.
In the 35th minute the Timbers would make things more difficult when Miguel Araujo was called for a foul in the penalty area. Eduard Löwen would take the penalty and put it perfectly into the upper left corner, and the score was now 2-0 St. Louis. A few minutes later Santiago Moreno had a great chance from close-in but tapped the shot just wide right. But seconds later, the Timbers did pull back a goal when Felipe Mora slotted a perfect pass across the front of the St. Louis goal and Jonathan Rodríguez finished easily, and the score was now 2-1 St. Louis.
But in first half stoppage time, the Timbers would fall victim to a St. Louis corner kick by Hartel, when a bouncing chance by Cedric Teuchert found it’s way past Crépeau, and the visitors had restored their two-goal lead at 3-1.
Seconds later the Timbers had a great chance to pull a goal back again but a chance by Mora after a fumble by St. Louis keeper Roman Bürki was blocked by Henry Kessler and was off the crossbar before rebounding away. The score at the break was 3-1 St. Louis.
In the 57th minute, the Timbers pulled back within a goal when Claudio Bravo made a nice run down the left side, and crossed to Evander, who headed back in front of the net to Mora, who headed home from close-in, and it was now 3-2 City.
But seconds later St. Louis was back in front by two goals when Nökkvi Þórisson curled in a perfect shot from the top of the Timbers box, and the score was 4-2 St. Louis now.
But in the 64th minute, the Timbers got a goal back again when Evander made a shot from the top of the box that was saved by Bürki, but Mora jumped on the rebound and knocked it home, and the score was 4-3 St. Louis now.
The Timbers through they had a late equalizer from Evander, but the play was correctly overruled by VAR for being offside.
In stoppage time, things got much tougher for the Timbers when Mora was given a straight red when he tripped over a St. Louis player on the turf.
But nine minutes into stoppage time, the Timbers did tie it up when Evander had a free kick chance from about 25 yards out, and he curled it in perfectly just inside the left post, and amazingly the score was level at 4-4.
The Timbers continued to attack even though they were down a man but never found the equalizer, and the match ended level at 4-4.
