The Thorns would have an early lead, and also was drawn with the Washington Spirit deep into stoppage time, but ended up on the short end of a 2-1 results. Hina Sugita had the lone goal for the Thorns, while Trinity Rodman and Leicy Santos would score for the hosts.
In just the fourth minute the Thorns had a great chance on a breakaway chance by Sophia Smith, but Washington goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury was up to the challenge with a nice kick save. In the 10th minute the Spirit had a good breakaway chance of their own with the ball ending up rebounding around in front of the Thorns goal, but Portland was able to clear it. In the 14th minute the hosts had yet another great breakaway chance, but Ashley Hatch put an open chance just wide right of the goal. Both teams had decent scoring chances during the rest of the first half, but neither team found the next and the score was 0-0 at the break.
But in the 49th minute the Thorns would take the lead when Alexa Spaanstra would play a nice pass into the box that Hina Sugita would one-time nicely just inside the left post, and the Thorns led 1-0.
In the 60th minute though, the hosts would tie it up when Trinity Rodman made a run down the left side, then cut inside and made a nice shot inside the left post that eluded Mackenzie Arnold, and the score was now tied 1-1.
After having a few breakaway chances that didn’t pay off for the hosts, the Thorns had a great breakaway chance in the 88th minute by Izzy D’Aquila that was off the crossbar before being cleared.
The match seemed headed for a draw, but six minutes into seven minutes of stoppage time, Rodman sent a cross into the box that was headed home by Washington’s Leicy Santos, which ended up being the game-winner in a 2-1 Spirit win.
