Miracle Timbers comeback ends with 4-2 win over San Jose

The Portland Timbers would end up making an amazing comeback, after trailing 2-0 in the 74th minute, ending up on the winning end of a 4-2 score against the San Jose Earthquakes.  Jonathan Rodríguez would score twice for the Timbers, with Felipe Mora and Evander also scoring.  Amahl Pellegrino and Hernán López  had the San Jose goals.

In the 13th minute, Kamal Miller would make an excellent sliding block after letting Cristian Espinoza slip in behind him, preventing a shot on goal.

After not happening at either end of the field for 20 minutes, the Earthquakes were on the board in the 31st minute, (former Timber) Jeremy Ebobisse headed it towards net, where it was saved by Maxime Crépeau, but the Timbers keeper didn’t control the rebound, and San Jose forward Amahl Pellegrino got to the ball first and knocked it in the net easily, and the Earthquakes had a 1-0 lead.

Only a few minutes later, the Timbers gifted the visitors a second goal.  Dairon Asprilla played the ball back to Larrys Mabiala near midfield, but the Timbers defender was sloppy with his dribble not paying attention to San Jose midfielder Hernán López who was marking him, and the Earthquke stole the ball easily and dribbled just a few yards before chipping the Timbers keeper from distance and into the net, and just that quickly the lead for the visitors was 2-0, which was the score at the break.

In the 50th minute, San Jose’s López hit a curling shot from outside the box that rattled off the Timbers crossbar, but rebounded over.

In the 61st minute, the Timbers would have their first good scoring chance of the game on a header by Felipe Mora, but Earthquakes keeper William Yarbrough made a nice save to keep the Timbers scoreless.  A few minutes later Santiago Moreno played in a nice into the run of Jonathan Rodríguez, but this shot was also saved by Yarbrough.

Then in the 71st minute, San Jose’s Bruno Wilson was called for a red card for the ball hitting his arm when making a stop on the line.  Evander stepped up to take the penalty kick and converted nicely inside the left post, and the Timbers had crawled back to 2-1.

And then in the 80th minute, the Timbers would tie it up when Rodríguez hit a nice low shot to the bottom left corner of the Earthquakes net, and suddenly it was level at 2-2.

And things got even crazier a few minutes later when Yarbrough and Rodríguez collided in the San Jose box.  Initially the foul was called on Rodríguez, but after a VAR review, the referee determined Yarbrough had fouled Rodríguez after the Timbers forward had been the only one to touch the pass, so another penalty kick was awarded.  Mora took the PK this time, and sent it right under the crossbar, and shockingly the Timbers had a late 3-2 lead.

At the end of 10 minutes of stoppage time, San Jose nearly tied it up when a ball that got past the Timbers keeper was cleared off the line brilliantly by Cristhian Paredes, and this play started a late Timbers break with Moreno and Rodríguez in a 2-on-1 break, with Rodríguez ending up finishing for a 4-2 lead, which would be the final as the whistle blew seconds later.
