Thorns come alive in second half after rain delayed start for 2-0 win in Houston

Despite the match being delayed by over two hours by thunderstorms in the Houston area, and a slow start by the Portland Thorns on the pitch, they would come alive for two second half goals and their sixth straight win, this time a 2-0 win over the Houston Dash.  Ana Dias and Olivia Moultrie would have the goals for the Thorns.

After both teams had fairly good early chances that did not end up in the net, the Thorns would have the first good chance of the match in the 16th minute when a shot from Janine Beckie rebounded off the right post.

Not long after there was a penalty kick for the Thorns called when Olivia Moultrie went down in the box.  But after a VAR review, the penalty kick was waved off, which appeared to be the correct call as there was little contact, if any.  The Thorns had a few more good chances in the half but never seriously threatened, and the match was scoreless at the break.

Just seconds into the second half, Houston had a wonderful chance to grab the lead when Diana Ordóñez made a nice run and had a nice shot from the top of the box that was beyond the reach of Thorns goalkeeper Shelby Hogan, but rebounded off the right post as the Thorns had done earlier, and the match was still scoreless.

But in the 56th minute, the Thorns would finally break through.  Hina Sugita made a run down the right side receiving a throw-in near the touchline, and dropped a nice pass to Ana Dias, who finished nicely with a one-touch shot just inside the left post, and the Thorns had a 1-0 lead.

In the 68th minute the Thorns would double the lead, when Beckie played a pass into a nice run by Moultrie, who wide open but at a tough angle, beat Houston goalkeeper Jane Campbell, and the score was now 2-0.

In the 72nd minute Houston appeared to have a golden opportunity to pull back a goal as Amanda West had an open shot from an angle, but her shot was right at Hogan and easily saved.  Early in stoppage time Sophia Smith had an equally open chance for the Thorns, but her shot was also right at the opposing goalkeeper.

Late in stoppage time, the Thorns had one more good chance to add another goal, with a shot by Payton Linnehan saved by Campbell, and a rebound chance by Marissa Sheva also saved nicely.  But shortly afterwards the final whistle blew and the Thorns had their sixth straight win, this time by a 2-0 score.
