Thorns lose 3-1 to Bay FC on Friday night at Providence Park

Defensive makes were on display on Friday night at Providence Park, but the Thorns would pay more for their mistakes and ended up on the short end of a 3-1 result to Bay FC.  Sophia Smith had the lone goal for the Thorns while Abby Dahlkemper, Rachel Hill, and Joelle Anderson would score for the visitors.

It didn’t take long for the visitors to take the lead, when in just the 7th minute, Dorian Bailey sent a high cross across the Thorns goal mouth that was headed home by Abby Dahlkemper from just a foot or so away, and Bay FC had a 1-0 lead.

In the 18th minute, Bay FC once again tallied into an open net when Asisat Oshoala made a run down the left side and crossed to Rachel Hill, who easily redirected into the open net, and the score was quickly 2-0 to the visitors.

In the 32nd minute though, the Thorns would take advantage of Bay goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland misplaying a pass directly to Thorn Sophia Smith, who easily rounded Rowland and also tallied into an open net, and the score was now 2-1 to Bay FC.  Late in the first half the Thorns thought they had a tying goal, but Smith was ruled offside though the replay was difficult to determine if she was.  The score was 2-1 to the visitors at the break.

Then in the 70th minute, the Thorns turned over the ball in their own half and paid the price when Joelle Anderson lined up a shot from outside the box that slipped just inside the left post past Thorns goalkeeper Mackenzie Arnold, and the lead was now 3-1.  Neither team found the net again and Bay FC would win by a 3-1 score.
