Timbers fall short in Colorado, lose by 2-1 score

The Rapids took the lead in the 14th minute when a ball rebounded around several times just outside the Timbers box, falling to Jonathan Lewis who was just onside, who finished with a low shot past Maxime Crépeau, and Colorado had a 1-0 lead.

Not long after a great shot from Evander was saved, in the 24th minute, the Timbers would tie it up off a corner kick from Evander that was headed towards the back post by Miguel Araujo, then finished by a header from David Ayala, and the score was now level at 1-1.

In the 44th minute the Timbers had a great chance to take the lead on a breakaway by Antony, but goalkeeper Zack Steffen got a touch on the ball as Antony rounded him, and an attempt to cross to Jonathan Rodríguez missed and the chance was lost.

Just into the second half, Antony had a great chance to take the lead when Evander found him wide open on a breakaway, but Evander couldn’t get a good strike and put the shot wide right.  Minutes later Rafael Navarro had a good look for Colorado but his shot was off the crossbar.

In the 71st minute the Rapids would re-take the lead off a free kick from about 30 yards out by Djordje Mihailovic that the Timbers defense really made no effort to defender as Navarro headed it home, and the score was now 2-1 to the home side.

The Timbers had great chances in stoppage time, by Felipe Mora and Mason Toye, but never found the equalizer, even though they had a man advantage for the last minute or so, and fell by a 2-1 score.
