Thorns can’t hold late 2-0 lead, drop CONCACAF W Champions Cup match to San Diego by 3-2 score

The Portland Thorns had a two goal second half lead they couldn’t protect in San Diego and fell to the Wave by a 3-2 score.  Sophia Smith and Reilyn Turner scored for the Thorns, while María Sánchez had a hat trick for the Wave (two were on penalty kicks.)

Sophia Smith gave the Thorns the early lead in the 26th minute with a low shot just inside the left post.  The Thorns led 1-0 at the break.

In the 54th minute the Thorns would double the lead when Sophie Hirst made a nice pass to an open Reilyn Turner was open in the box, and her shot eluded the goalkeeper, and the Thorns were up 2-0.

But in the 65th minute the Wave were awarded a penalty kick on a foul at the edge of the box by Sam Coffey. María Sánchez would convert the kick just inside the right post, and the score was now 2-1 Thorns.

Just a few minutes later, the Wave would get the equalizer when a nice cross was headed in by Sánchez, and the score was now 2-2.

In the 83rd minute, San Diego would get their second penalty kick when Becky Saurebrunn was called for a handball in the box. Sánchez would take the kick again, and once again finished to the right past Shelby Hogan, and the score was now 3-2 San Diego, which would be the final.
